Joss and 'Liza in the Big Dollhouse

Nathaniel here. Given that I'm been gone a week you may have read this elsewhere but I need to share. I need to talk to you about it the way I need air, water and actresses.

Zing went the strings of Nathaniel's heart

E!'s TV guru Wanda broke what is possibly the best news I've heard all year: Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly) is returning to television. The small screen always needs him. Why waste time on yet another disposable superhero movie (like Wonder Woman) that the suits will ruin anyway when you can be creating another series for the ages? Joss, ever one to sweeten what's already delicious, adds a cherry on top: Eliza Dushku (Faith the Vampire Slayer) is coming with him. The baddest B.K.* TV babe of my lifetime will star as "Nora" in the new series Dollhouse loosely adapted from Henrik Ibsen's masterpiece.

I kid. I kid. I'm just so happy right now. Here's the basic gist from FOX
Echo (Eliza Dushku) [is] a young woman who is literally everybody's fantasy. She is one of a group of men and women who can be imprinted with personality packages, including memories, skills, language—even muscle memory—for different assignments. The assignments can be romantic, adventurous, outlandish, uplifting, sexual and/or very illegal. When not imprinted with a personality package, Echo and the others are basically mind-wiped, living like children in a futuristic dorm/lab dubbed the Dollhouse, with no memory of their assignments—or of much else. The show revolves around the childlike Echo's burgeoning self-awareness, and her desire to know who she was before, a desire that begins to seep into her various imprinted personalities and puts her in danger both in the field and in the closely monitored confines of the Dollhouse.
'5 by 5' motherf***** '5 by 5'. If you're not as excited as I am do not puncture my balloon in the comments. If you are, share in the giddiness with me.

*B.K. (Before Katee Sackhoff)

Most assuredly, I share your enthusiasm, Nat. Happy dance!

happy dance indeed. ecstacy not even required to make serotonin levels explode!

oh and how crazy is it that it's a bit like Fantasy Island in concept but from a sick and twisted direction of course

...she always did remind me of a Sindy doll.

The tv show I was waiting for..
Eliza is so hot and this storyline seems to be made perfectly for a tv series..

Absolutely hilarious premise. I'm imagining it as extremely episodic with guest stars galore, somewhere between "Quantum Leap" and "The Love Boat".

I have this theory that Joss approached the SciFi channel first and they were all, "No, we won't fund this project, but tell you what. Here's a crisp $5 bill with our phone number on it. When you get canceled 6 episodes in, give us a call, and we'll syndicate the hell out of it."

I am excited, but girl needs to gain some weight. She looks terrible in that star-***ing Nickelback video.

sindy doll eh?

anon #2 it is ready made for the episodic but I hope Joss works a longform arc into it. He's one of the only TV creatives that truly seems to understand it as an absolute core strength of the medium.

dave funny theory... and (sadly) really easy to buy into

neel you owe me a drink (or something) since i just sat through that entire awful video for peaks of Her.

The Power of Dushku forced me to.

Joss + Eliza almost certainly = TV gold follwed by cancellation.

I want so much to do happy penguin dance and I don't dare cut lose because I just know this is going to end up as DVD cult fodder in 18 months.

It's just a wonderfully bizarre and Jossian concept. I truly love the sound of this.

This is almost enough to offset the awfulness of Battlestar's imminent end.

I propose that B.K. (Before Katee) and A.S. (After Sackhoff, or After Starbuck, whichever you like) become the new B.C. and A.D.

I mean, come on.

anom #2 here

Yeah, longform arc stories were tvpretty great in Buffy and when I say The Dollhouse premise is perfect fot the series format, I was thinking about that.

Wondering if Sarah Michelle Gellar could turn up as a guest star, she really needs a good character to work again. Although I'm pretty sure Krysta Now will be a very good thing in her career and I can't wait to here her sing Teen Horniness Is Not a Crime.

How perfect would she have been as Wonder woman though?

NATHANIEL R said...

She might have been a little "street" for Diana Prince ;) but then again, in the interview linked (at E! which goes into details) Joss basically comes right out and says that there's way more to Dushku's talent than has ever been on view. So I hope he stretches her for this one even though I do heartily approve of her bad chick persona thus far

After hearing things about Joss Whedon from The Buffy and Angel shows, I'm not sure how I feel about Joss.

I was waiting on you to post this.

Nicole the only people who had issues with Joss where Sarah Michelle Gellar, David Boreanez & Charisma Carpenter. I think Nicolas was indifferent & Alyson was on Joss's side. I really don't know how it played off, is Joss really an ass or are they? Who knows.

i have no idea what y'all are talking about

Nat- There were issues on the set of Buffy and Angel. Go to Buffy fan boards ( or google)and find out more info it's still around.

Apparently( according to these boards) SMG said that Joss was controlling and treated her badly on the set ( Freddie also said the same when he would visit the set). She also said he threatened her by saying it could always be Faith the Vampire Slayer. The cast took sides ( this was after Charisma and David left for Angel) Alyson & Anya ( forgot he real name) took Joss's side. Alyson had a falling out with Sarah over the ending of the show and Sarah not telling them or something. They made up over SNL a few years ago. I saw both episodes. Sarah told Alyson that Willow Rocks on a board at the end of SNL. Then when Alyson was on there she did the same and said Buffy Rocks.

On Angel apparently Joss fired Charisma because she got pregnant. Joss claims that she wanted to be let go and start a family. Seems like he lied because there is a radio interview of Charisma after she had the baby saying that she couldn't wait to start the new season. Apparently the two had got in a disagreement about this.

David also said that Joss was controlling and he mentioned that he was more free on the set of Bones than on Buffy or Angel.
The chicks that play Darla and Drusilla also had issues with Joss.

To be honest I don't know how true all of this is besides the interviews ( David , Charisma & Sarah) and the SNL show. There were clearly issues on these sets as there is with all tv shows. I don't know how severe they were. It does seem like Sarah wants to distance herself from Buffy.I also kind of doubt that she would work with him again.

If you ask the Joss fans- They say that Sarah & David are itches( you know with a B) and Charisma wanted to start a family.

If you ask the Sarah, Charisma and David fans They say Joss is a controlling jerk who thinks he owns the actors on the show.
Both sides are hardcore about this.

I guess we will find out years from know on the Buffy untold story.lol.

I do like Joss's shows though.

Oh I just read that you didn't want people to dampen your mood about this. I'm still excited about the show and I will wacth if it's good. Sorry :-)

Jesus Christ. Who cares which side is "right". Looking at those actors careers pre- and post- Buffy, Joss Whedon is the best thing that ever happened to all of them. Even if he was exactly as controlling as you suggest - if I was an actor/writer, I'd KILL to be on one of his shows, as for many of the actors he's worked with, it's career transforming stuff.

I just can't feel too sorry for people sitting on their enormous piles of money earned from syndication, who whine that the creator of the show that earned them their fortune was "difficult to work with." I wish difficult people like Joss had MY phone number!

(wow, that really seems to have hit a nerve with me. Carry on.)

I was IMing with a coworker in a very boring meeting when I saw this announcement about Dollhouse and I sent him the link. The following conversation ensued via IM:

Coworker: I'd watch that.

Me: I'd watch anything Joss did on TV.

I am Joss's bitch.

Coworker: Yea. Me too.

----

I think "I am Joss's bitch" would make a pretty good t-shirt.

Yay!!! Joss is coming back to TV!!! FINALLY!

I'll be there opening night to watch anything Joss puts out on TV if I'm in the US, and if I'm not then I'll be sure to find it elsewhere the next day! ;o)
